Gulu City Council Demolishes Illegal Roadside Structures to Restore Order.

Gulu City, Monday 26 March 2026: Authorities in Gulu City on Monday morning launched an operation to remove structures that had been erected on pavements and road reserves in an effort to restore proper business order within the city.

The enforcement exercise is being conducted by officials from the Gulu City Council, with support from law enforcement personnel. The team began demolishing temporary stalls, kiosks, and other makeshift structures that traders had placed along streets and pedestrian walkways.

City officials explained that the action follows a two-week notice previously issued to traders who were operating along roadsides and pavements. During that period, the vendors were directed to voluntarily remove their structures and relocate their businesses to officially designated markets within the city.

According to authorities, the presence of roadside stalls had contributed to congestion in the central business areas, obstructed pedestrian movement, and affected the free flow of traffic.

Leaders from Gulu City Council say the exercise aims to improve urban order, promote sanitation, and ensure that commercial activities are carried out in organized trading spaces.

Some traders affected by the operation expressed frustration over losing their selling points, while others admitted that they had received prior notice from the city authorities.

The council has warned that the demolition exercise will continue across different parts of Gulu City until all unauthorized structures on pavements and road reserves are cleared.

City leaders are now urging traders to comply with the guidelines and conduct their businesses within gazetted markets to avoid further enforcement actions.
