Suspect Arrested After Weeks on the Run Over Alleged Killing Linked to Land Dispute.
Authorities have arrested a 25-year-old man who had been evading capture for several weeks following the suspected killing of his elder sibling in Oyam District earlier this year.
The suspect, identified as Innocent Adungu, was taken into custody after a coordinated effort involving local clan leaders and security personnel. Reports indicate that he had allegedly been hiding since January, when his brother, Phillip Erong, aged 29, lost his life during a confrontation reportedly connected to a disagreement over family land.
According to information from community sources, tensions between the two brothers had been building for some time before the fatal incident occurred. The dispute is said to have centered on ownership and boundaries of inherited property, an issue that has increasingly been cited in domestic conflicts within rural communities.
Investigators revealed that the breakthrough in the search came after close cooperation between traditional leaders from the Okii Amat clan and law enforcement agencies. The joint operation relied heavily on intelligence gathering and mobile phone tracking technology, which helped trace the suspect’s movements.
The search eventually led officers to Mukono, where he was found and apprehended. He is currently being held at the Central Police Station in the area as officials prepare arrangements to transfer him back to Oyam District, where he is expected to face formal charges related to the alleged crime.
Police have commended the role played by community leaders, noting that their involvement significantly contributed to the success of the operation. Authorities also used the opportunity to urge families to seek peaceful ways of resolving land disagreements, emphasizing that such conflicts often escalate into violence when left unmanaged.
Local leaders in Oyam have expressed relief following the arrest, saying the development may help ease tensions within the affected family and the wider community. They have called for justice to take its course while encouraging dialogue and mediation in future disputes to prevent similar tragedies.
The case remains under active investigation as officials work to compile evidence ahead of court proceedings.
