UWA Nets Alleged Ivory Dealer, Recovers 154kg of Elephant Tusks in Nwoya

news

Authorities from the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) have arrested a man suspected of involvement in illegal ivory trade after a significant haul of elephant tusks was discovered in Nwoya District.

According to officials, the suspect identified as Opiro Francis was apprehended during a targeted security operation carried out by the Special Wildlife Crime Unit working jointly with the Uganda Police Force. The action followed intelligence reports indicating ongoing wildlife trafficking activities in the area.

UWA’s Assistant Commissioner for Communications, Bashir Hangi, confirmed that the arrest took place on Sunday. At the time of his capture, the suspect was allegedly found with ten pieces of raw elephant ivory weighing approximately 154 kilograms.

Hangi explained that legal proceedings are already underway, noting that the suspect is expected to appear before the Standards, Utilities and Wildlife Court. He will face charges related to illegal possession of protected wildlife materials under the provisions of the Uganda Wildlife Act.

Meanwhile, UWA Executive Director Dr. James Musinguzi described the arrest as a strong signal of the country’s continued commitment to fighting wildlife crime. He emphasized that authorities remain determined to dismantle trafficking networks that threaten endangered species.

Uganda has in recent years intensified enforcement operations, with conservation agencies working closely with law enforcement partners to curb poaching and illegal wildlife trade. Officials say such coordinated actions are essential to protecting the nation’s biodiversity and preserving its natural heritage.
