GULU, UGANDA — Grief has returned to the family of the late Speaker as Mzee Nathan Okori, father of Jacob Oulanyah, has passed away at the age of 97.

According to family sources, Mzee Okori breathed his last at St. Mary’s Hospital Lacor in Gulu District on March 20, 2026. His death comes exactly four years after the passing of his son, creating a deeply emotional moment for relatives, friends, and the wider community.

Jacob Oulanyah, who served as Speaker of Parliament, died on March 20, 2022, at the age of 56 while receiving specialized medical care abroad. His leadership and influence left a lasting mark on Uganda’s political landscape, making the coincidence of dates particularly poignant for many Ugandans.

Mzee Okori was widely respected as a family patriarch whose life spanned nearly a century. Known for his humility and strong values, he played a foundational role in shaping the life of his son, who rose to become one of the country’s most prominent leaders.

Leaders and community members in northern Uganda have begun sending messages of condolence, describing the loss as not only a personal tragedy for the Oulanyah family but also a moment of reflection for the region.

Burial arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days.
